The ‘Princess Charlotte’ was the first paddle steamer to run a regular service across the River Mersey. She was launched on 25th July 1816 at Motterhead’s yard in Liverpool and entered the water complete with engines, paddles, masts and funnel and commenced service the following day.
Eastham Ferry closed in 1929 having run continuously for 113 years. During that time 28 paddle steamers were used, that last three of which were named ‘Pearl’, ‘Ruby’, and ‘Sapphire’ respectively. Several of the early vessels were named after members of the Stanley family of nearby Hooton Hall.
This commission was undertaken for the Eastham Archive Group to commemorate the bicentennial of the ‘Princess Charlotte’ entering service.
